Tea Cozy Pattern: A Homemade Gift for Mom
Here's the perfect tea cozy pattern to whip up this evening for Mom. It's a very easy project that uses no-sew appliques of a bird (or the image of your choice) to adorn the cozy and matching four coasters.
This project is a quick, last-minute homemade gift that can easily be made in an evening. Personalize the colours and appliqued image to your mom's preferences and she's sure to love her gift.
I plan on including some loose tea leaves and a tea ball along with the cozy and matching coasters. You could also include some cookies in a jar to complete this 'tea-time' themed gift.
Tea Cozy Pattern: Materials Needed
- 1/2 yard of fabric for the outer layer of the tea cozy - 1/2 yard of fabric for the inner lining of the tea cozy - coordinating thread - scissors - sewing machine - pins - large piece of poster board - double sided fusible webbing that is suitable for no-sew appliques. I used Heat 'n' Bond Ultra. - iron and ironing board
Tea Cozy Pattern: Making the Pattern Piece
1. Draw a 12" by 12" square onto a large piece of poster board. Draw a curved line that begins 7 1/2" up from the bottom of your square and curves around to the other side. Cut this shape out. You should now have a rectangle with a curved top. See the photo below for clarification.
Tea Cozy Pattern: Cutting Out The Pieces
1. Using the pattern piece that you just created, trace and cut out 2 pieces from your outer fabric and 2 pieces from your lining fabric.
2. Fold your batting in half so that you create one thick layer that is made up of two thinner layers of batting. Using your pattern, cut out two pieces from your new, thick piece of batting.
Tea Cozy Pattern: Sewing the Cozy

1. Now it's time to sew together your lining and batting. Layer in this order: one batting piece (made up of two layers of batting), one lining piece facing right side up, one lining piece facing right side down, followed by the final batting piece. Essentially, you will have a 'sandwich' made up of two batting pieces with the lining pieces in the middle.
2. Stitch along one side, around the curve and down the other side. Do not stitch along the bottom part (the horizontal, straight edge).
3. Right sides facing, sew together your outer pieces, leaving the bottom edge un-sewn.
4. With your scissors, make small cuts along the curved part of your outer section.
5. Turn your outer section right-side out and press. Place this inside your lining and batting piece, so that the right sides of your fabric are facing. Match up your seams and pin in place.
6. Stitch around the bottom edge, leaving a 4" hole.
7. Reach into the hole and turn your cozy right-side out and press.
8. Fold the raw edges of your hole into your bag so that the folds line up with your stitched edge. Pin in place.
9. Stitch a scant 1/8" seam around the bottom of your cozy.
10. Cut a 5 1/2" by 5 1/2" square from your lining fabric and press the edges 1/4" under.
11. Follow the instructions on your fusible webbing to iron a large piece onto the fabric that you want your applique to be cut from. Trace and cut out your applique.
Peel off the paper backing on your applique and iron it onto the right-side of your 5 1/2" by 5 1/2" square.
You can also iron on your applique after your tea cozy is done. I did it this way and everything turned out fine.
12. Position your square onto your cozy and pin in place. My square sat 3 1/2" from the edges and 3" from the bottom of my cozy.
13. Stitch your square onto the cozy, making sure that you only stitch through the top layer - you wouldn't want to sew your tea cozy shut!
Tea Cozy Pattern: The Coasters
1. Cut four 4" by 4" squares from your lining fabric and four 4" by 4" squares from your outer fabric.
2. Stack one lining square and one outer fabric square on top of each other with the right sides together.
3. Place a 4" square of batting (cut from only one layer of batting) on top of your fabric and stitch the three pieces together, leaving a 2" opening.
4. Cut the corners on a diagonal.
5. Turn coasters inside out and stitch a 1/8" seam around the edge, making sure the raw edges of the hole are tucked in.
6. Iron on your applique.
7. Repeat steps 2-6 for your other three coasters.
There. Wasn't that easy? You've completed the teapot cozy pattern!
