Origami Box

origami boxThis origami box is a great gift wrap idea. I'm always short on boxes in my house, so I have whipped up a number of these to hold my baked goods or smaller homemade gifts.

These boxes work best when they are made with cardstock, but I have also used 12" by 12" scrapbooking paper as well. Use some pretty patterned paper, or stamp designs onto a plain piece of paper for a truly cheap gift wrap idea.

You can experiment with different sizes of paper to make different sizes of boxes. For this tutorial, I used a 12" by 12" sheet of paper and ended up with a box that was 4 1/4" long by 4 1/4" wide and 2" deep.

The Materials

You'll need:

- two pieces of paper
- scissors
- tape

The Making

With the good side facing down, fold your piece of paper in half.

Unfold your piece of paper. Fold it in half the other way and then unfold it again. When you look at your unfolded paper, you will see two creases in the shape of a cross.

Now, place the tip of one corner at the point where the two creases intersect and firmly fold the corner down.

Take the bottom edge of the corner that you just folded and bring it up to the centre line and crease firmly again.

Unfold what you have just folded and repeat with the other three corners. When done, your paper should look like a grid.

With one corner facing you, use your scissors to cut along two 'squares' on your grid. You will start your cut one 'square' over to the right from the centre fold that runs into the tip of your corner. Make another identical cut to the left of your centre line.

Repeat the above step for the opposite corner to where you just cut. When done, you will have two tabs.

Note: There are only two tabs cut, not four, so don't do this step for all four corners!

Turn your attention to one of the other corners that was not cut and fold it into the centre of your paper.

Fold the sides of this piece so that they criss-cross over each other.

Repeat for the opposite corner.

Now take these pieces and prop them up, tucking the tips in. The sides of your origami box are now taking shape.

Fold both the tabs over these sides. If needed, secure with a small amount of tape.

For the bottom of the box, repeat the above steps with a slightly smaller piece of paper, so that the top and bottom of your origami box slide nicely into each other

To make the bottom smaller, simply fold your second piece of paper so that the edges are about 1/4" away from each other and trim off the excess edge.

Put your gingerbread cookies, almond roca or even your caramel popcorn inside of this pretty box.

Tie with a ribbon and add a gingerbread name tag and you've got a lovely gift wrap idea!
