Simple Needle Book Pattern: A great homemade gift for Mother's Day or Valentine's Day!
This simple needle book pattern is all you need to make mom (or another lady in your life) a darling homemade gift for the next holiday.
This gift is easy and inexpensive to make - it's the perfect way to use up scrap bits of fabric. You could also cut up an old tablecloth or pillowcase for this project as well.
My needle book features a new-sew applique that takes advantage of fusible webbing. If you don't have any fusible webbing, you can always decorate your needle book with a hand embroidered flower, bird or dragonfly.
The Materials
- scrap fabric - scrap piece of felt - quilt batting - fusible webbing, such as Heat'n'Bond Ultra - iron - sewing matchine and thread
The Cutting and Making
1. Cut out two 7" x 10" pieces of fabric and one 7" x 10" piece of quilt batting.
2. Layer your pieces in this order: batting, one piece of fabric facing right side up, and one piece of fabric facing right side down. Pin everything together.
3. Stitch around the sides of your fabric, leaving a 3" hole. Trim corners and sides- but do not trim the area where you have your hole!
4. Reach into the hole and pull your needle book right-side out. Iron everything nice and flat, tucking the raw edges of the hole inside the opening.
5. Sew a scant 1/8" seam around the edges of your book.
6. Cut out a piece of felt that is 8" x 5 1/2". Centre this piece onto the inside of your needle book and stitch down the middle of the felt to secure it to the book.
7. Following the instructions on your fusible webbing and adhere your applique to the front centre of your needle book.
8. Put a few needles in there too!
Isn't it just lovely?
A needle book is indispensable to any crafter, or person who darns or mends regularly. You'll certainly be able to find someone on your list who will enjoy this great handmade gift!
