Make Your Own Christmas Cards: The perfect Christmas craft for kids.
The holidays are just around the corner and that means it's time to make your own Christmas cards!
Here are some great ideas that you (and the kids) can get started on this evening. These cards are the perfect Christmas craft to make and, who knows, making them might actually become one of your family's holiday traditions!
All of these cards can be made inexpensively using items found in your home. Here's what you'll need:
Materials
- cardstock - markers - buttons - newsprint - gluestick - computer paper - scissors
GETTING STARTED First make your cards by folding and cutting sheets of cardstock to the desired size. Once that is done, it's time to decorate!
THUMBPRINT CARDS Here's my favourite way of making cards...and my son loves it too because it means that he gets to colour on himself!
Simply colour the pads of your fingers and then press your fingertips onto your card roughly into a rough shape. For young children, it is helpful if you guide their hands to put their fingerprints down in the right spots.

Here, my son has 'drawn' a Christmas tree and two presents:
Next, take a fine tipped marker and draw in the details. It's a nice effect, is it not?
Here are some more fingerprints...
Put in the detail and, VOILA!
Some birds done in the same way...this would be much cuter if there were four birds with the letters N-O-E-L in their conversation bubbles.
BUTTON CARDS
Gluing buttons down to your paper and then drawing in the details is another fun way to make Christmas cards. (psst...this could also be done with peppermint candies or cotton balls)

Other ways to use buttons on cards is to make a holiday wreath, spell out the words 'HO, HO, HO' or to 'decorate' a hand-drawn Christmas tree.
TORN NEWSPRINT CARDS
A fantastically creative way to make cards this holiday season is to get your children to rip out small pieces of newsprint and glue them onto your cards. Once the newsprint has been glued down, decide what Christmas shapes have been made and then get your kids to draw in the details...it's kind of like finding the shapes in the clouds, except you're using newsprint!
WHITE ON WHITE CARDS
Next to the thumbprint shapes, this is my favourite way of doing cards: white on white. These cards have such a peaceful and calming look. Simply cut out shapes from white computer paper or cardstock and glue them onto your card.
Here I have glued on a snowflake...snowflake patterns can easily be found on the internet. Spray the snowflakes with some glitter glue for a glamorous look!
Get creative and expand on these ideas to make your own Christmas cards this year!
