Homemade Playdough

homemade playdoughA batch of homemade playdough has preserved my sanity more than once. On snowy or rainy days when we're stuck inside, my son practically climbs the walls and I find I need something to keep him busy and entertained for hours. Thankfully, playdough fits the bill and keeps my son's restlessness at bay.

Playdough is one of those fabulous inexpensive homemade gifts...it even works great as a last minute holiday gift too! Slip it in a cute drawstring bag with a small cookie cutter and you can give a kid you know a gift that keeps them occupied and engaged for ages.

I've included two recipes here. One is made with Kool-aid and the other is not. I don't know if this makes me a really bad mom or a really good one, but we never have Kool-aid in the house, so I find it's nice to have a 'traditional' version on hand that I can whip up from basic staples I can find in my cupboards. That being said, I do prefer the Kool-aid version simply because it smells so yummy!

Homemade Playdough

Traditional Version:

- 1 1/4 c flour
- 1/2 c salt
- 2 t cream of tartar

Combine in a measuring cup:

- 1 c water
- 1 T oil
- 25 drops of food colouring

Add the liquids to your dry ingredients, whisk out lumps. Cook over medium heat, stirring with a spoon until the clay pulls away from the sides of pan.

Remove from heat, cool a little and knead. Wrap in plastic, removing all air. Will keep for a long time.
