Homemade Laundry Soap
This homemade laundry soap is gentle on the planet and your pocket book. It costs me only $1.50CDN to put together a batch of dry ingredients to give away as a gift.
In order for your laundry detergent to be truly eco-friendly, make sure that you use a 'pure' soap...without synthetic additives. Look around; you'd be surprised where you can find this stuff. I was able to find some pure goat's milk soap at my dollar store to use in my laundry detergent at home!
Put the dry ingredients in a pretty glass jar, along with a copy of the recipe and you have a unique and inexpensive gift idea that will make everyone enjoy laundry day just a little bit more.

The Ingredients
- 1 c grated pure soap - 1/2 c washing soda - 1/2 c borax - 6 c water - 4 c water - 22 c water
- 1 T essential oil (optional...can be expensive)
Homemade Laundry Soap: The Making
1. Grate your soap.

2. In a large saucepan, add soap and 6 c water until the soap is completely dissolved. Add borax and washing soda and stir until thickened. Remove from heat.
3. Pour this mixture into a large pail. Add 4 c of water and your essential oil and mix well. Add another 22 c of water and stir again. Allow the mixture to sit over night. Will thicken as it rests.
Use 1/4c - 1/2c of soap per load of washing. Homemade laundry detergent does not sud, but that doesn't mean it's not working!

Eco-friendly wrapping tip
Use the drawstring bag pattern to make up a bag for your gift of laundry soap. Embroider the words 'homemade laundry soap' on the outside of the bag for a lovely touch.
