Homemade Gifts in a Jar
Homemade gifts in a jar are one of the best Christmas gifts you can give away this year: they're cheap, easy to make and appreciated by the people who get them.
If you don't have enough money to give away a bunch of homemade baking this holiday, gifts-in-a-jar are a great alternative. Much of the cost of baking is found in the butter and eggs, but with a gift in a jar, you only give the dry ingredients, which tend to be more cost effective.
Any recipe at home can be converted to a jarred gift, as long as the dry ingredients equal roughly 4 cups.
Unless your dry ingredients have an expiry date (like powdered milk) your gift-in-a-jar can sit on the shelf for one year. However, after 3 months, brown sugar hardens and has to be chipped out of the jar with a spoon.
Decorating Ideas
Top with:
- a 6" square piece of fabric - a vintage doily - silk flowers glued onto your lid - homemade polymer clay objects
Tie on:
- ribbon or rick rack - yarn - a 18" long strip of fabric - a vintage button - a cookie cutter or a pretty spoon or whisk
And don't forget to include a pretty card with the baking instructions written on it! If you don't have enough time to make up a pretty recipe card with the baking instructions on it, don't worry. All of recipes for baked goods in this section also include a free pdf of a 4" x 6" card that you can download and print off for free...
...like this one...isn't it cute?

Most people think that gifts in a jar are only food related, but that doesn't have to be the case. Think 'outside the jar' and give a craft-in-a-jar or put a number of related items together in the jar as a themed gift.
Unless otherwise stated, the projects included in this section all use quart-sized canning jars.
