Handmade Baby Book: A homemade christmas present idea that will be treasured for years.
A snuggly handmade baby book that is perfect for little hands to hold. Recommended for children aged 6 - 18 months.
This baby book is sure to delight the little ones in your life. My particular book is meant for a little girl, but you can easily customize for a boy, by changing the background colours of your pages.
A quick image search on google for farm animals will yield many photos that you can print off and trace onto your felt. Cut the pieces out and sew them onto your pages (sewing is better than gluing as it is more secure).

If you're short on time, or wary of your artistic skills, you can purchase the Handmade Baby Book Pattern for $3.50 USD.
The eight-page pattern book includes the pieces for five farm animals: a sheep, cow, pig, horse and a duck as well as a 'Stitchery Garden' that illustrates how to make a straight stitch, a lazy daisy stitch and a french knot. The Stitchery Garden also includes step-by-step instructions on how to make all of the embroidered details included in my sample book.
It was really exciting to come up with this pattern and I know that I will be using the pattern pieces again. I plan on using appliqueing the sheep onto a plain skirt of my daughter's.
You could also purchase this pattern and some felt for a new mom and give it as a holiday gift. Mom will love the chance to make such a cute book for her child!

------------------------------- Materials
- felt cut in 6 1/2" X 6 1/2" squares in various colours - embroidery floss - needle - scissors - quilt batting - sewing machine - a purchased copy of the pattern or printouts of farm animals
First, cut out six squares of felt that are 6 1/2" x 6 1/2". These will be the pages of your book.
Cut out strips of felt in various widths and shapes and sew these along the bottom edge of of your pages (the back page is left blank). These strips will form the 'ground' that your farm animals stand on. See photos for some ideas on how to do this.
Here's a horse galloping through a field of wheat...
...and a cow grazing on the prairies.
Trace your pattern pieces onto your felt in the colours you think suitable. Then, stitch the animals onto your pages using two strands of embroidery floss.
Using the Stitchery Garden as a guide, or your own imagination, add in embroidered details onto your felt pages. Here are some suggestions...
...some stalks of wheat...
...irises...
...dragonflies..
...and my personal favourite, some yarn and needles...
Using five strands of embroidery floss, embroider on the sounds each animal makes and the title of your book.
...quack...
...moo...
...the title of my book was 'on the farm'...
Centre of piece of 6" x 6" quilt batting between two of your pages (wrong sides facing).
Making a scant 1/8" seam, machine sew the two felt pages together to make one complete page. Repeat for the other four pieces of felt until you have three complete pages in total.
Hand sew all of your pages together by making small straight stitches over the top of your machine stitches. (Hand sewing is recommended as the book is too bulky to fit through the sewing machine).
Once your handmade baby book is completed, give it to a wee one that you cherish!
